Haley Joel Osment ‘Horrified’ After Using Antisemitic Slur In Arrest Video: ‘It Devastates Me’
Haley Joel Osment is feeling remorse following his recent arrest. Bodycam video of the Oscar nominee shows him using an antisemitic slur against a police officer after being taken into custody on suspicion of public intoxication at a popular California ski resort on April 8. Osment reacted to the incident in a statement obtained by People and indicated that he was previously unaware of what he’d said until he saw the footage. “I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner,” he said, adding, “The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place.” Osment’s legal troubles come three months after he lost his Altadena, Calif., home in the Los Angeles wildfires. The 37-year-old went on to acknowledge that the tragedy, however, doesn’t justify his offensive language. “But that’s no excuse for using this disgusting word. From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts,” he continued. “What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage – I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me. I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.” Osment was charged with misdemeanor public intoxication and cocaine possession, the Mono County District Attorney’s Office confirmed in a press release on April 18. The actor is scheduled to be arraigned in early June. His representative did not immediately respond to Access Hollywood’s multiple requests for comment. The “Sixth Sense” and “Blink Twice” star has had previous run-ins with the law, including a 2006 DUI that stemmed from a car crash in which he’d broken a rib. He pleaded no contest at the time and received three years’ probation, per the Associated Press.
