John Travolta Explains Inspiration Behind His Viral Beret Look at Cannes Film Festival

John Travolta is sharing the inspiration behind his viral beret look at the Cannes Film Festival. On Friday, May 15, the “Pulp Fiction” star had fans doing a double take when he walked the red carpet at the premiere of his directorial debut, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.” There, he rocked a cream-colored wool beret, glasses, and freshly cut beard alongside his 26-year-old daughter Ella Travolta. Speaking with CNN on Monday, May 18, the actor explained that he was channeling “old school directors” who wore the accessories. “I thought that’s what I’m doing,” he noted, adding how he wanted to “play the part” of a director. “So I looked up pictures – 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and the old school directors wore the berets and the glasses,” he said, additionally sharing, “I’m going to do an homage to being a director. So I’m going to play the part of being a director. And then when I look back I’ll know, ‘Oh that was ‘Propeller One-Way Night Coach.’ That was Cannes. That’s when I won the Palme d’Or.’ And I will have vividness of it.” Travolta was presented with the prestigious honorary award onstage by festival head Thierry Frémaux, who called him “one of the greatest actors” deserving the award.
